can I transfer ranorex floating license server to a Virtual Machine?

Post by hobli » Fri May 24, 2019 4:22 am

Dear Ranorex staff,

We are planning to move current ranorex license server to a different machine.
Current license server version is 4.1.3, and we are running floating license. I would like to check if we can move to a Virtual machine or have to move to a physical machine?

Anything we need pay attention to the new machine selected?

thanks

Hi,

Of course, you can transfer the Ranorex floating license from one computer, to another, including VM. Please folow the steps described here:
https://www.ranorex.com/help/latest/ran ... a-license/
Because you are using a quite old license server, the procedure could be slightly different. But generally, the license transfer steps should be more or less the same. BTW, you should really consider updating both license server and Ranorex license itself, to latest version ;)

Hi,

Well, on the one hand, I understand the budget constraints. On the other hand, however, I think that your company's TA commitment is not at very high level? Either this, or someone did a very poor research, before purchasing Ranorex? You see, implementing TA is a long-term project and as such, it requires certain amount of investment. Ranorex, as any other TA tool, requires updates to stay ahead of new challenges and technologies. Additionally, even TA tool like Ranorex is just a piece of SW and so it requires bug fixes ;) Without updates, Ranorex may work relative fine for some time. But then someone decides to update certain UI lib, start using recent web browsers or new Android/iOS SDK. And then you will quickly realize, how obsolete your version is! And you will also find, that your company have to pay full price for new license or drop Ranorex, which means the initial investment is splashed in a toilet :D Just my two cents ;)
