Feature Requests

Post by atom » Thu Jul 01, 2010 4:26 pm

Hiya

I would like to propose the following feature requests to Ranorex please:

1. Have a Recorder only package
In most organizations, it is the business analyst that records test scenario's
and passes these recordings to the automation team, who perhaps do a few
modifications/clean-up of the generated code, and then execute them.
Currently Recorder is only in the premium package

2. Fully document how to add a new Adapter type
We have controls in our AUT that ranorex does not recognize, we have developed
helper functions that work around this. However we cannot make Recorder/Spy
identify the controls using our helper functions

3. External integrations
Ranorex is a very stand alone product, with no integration to a results storage server, test case management system, or bug tracking system.

Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for posting your suggestions.

We already had discussions concerning a standalone Recorder Package, but postponed that feature due to technical problems and a priority shift to Ranorex 3.0. We will consider that request for post 3.0 versions again.

We are working on a Plug-In SDK, but i cannot tell you a release date yet. At the moment it is only possible by training from one of our employees. Please read following post

We are constantly expanding Ranorex, but there are so many technologies, third party controls and tools, that it is not possible to support all of them. That's why we try to do it the other way round: Ranorex stores results in a simple XML format that can then be imported by other tools. Additionally, the Ranorex reporting/logging can be extended to store results to any system.

Point 1 in my list depends on the organisation actually
For sofware companies with a QA department, often the test scenarios come from the manual test team, however for our clients, who wish to perform automated user acceptance testing, they do not have a QA dept, and instead scenarios come from the business side (BA's), who just want to record the scenario, and pass it on

Also please note for 2 why do we ask this?

We are a software company that internally test automates our products before delivery to clients
Our clients then often automate their acceptance tests
So we are increasingly getting asked how do we automate tests by our clients, as when they point say QTP at our application GUI, nothing is recognised.

So what we tell them is:

- We use Ranorex
- We have developed a helper library to extend ranorex to see our controls

We then get asked, can we see your extensions in the Spy and Recorder tool?
Currently our answer is No, and this is putting off clients buying Ranorex

Thanks

Although the Plugin SDK (documentation, samples, ...) is not yet finished, some 3rd party plugins for Ranorex already exist or are currently in development. Those plugins are usually done in cooperation, with Ranorex providing training and know-how.

If you want to start creating Ranorex plugins right now, please get in contact with sales_at_ranorex.com and explain them your business case. You can discuss what training/cooperation will be suitable for you.

I informed our sales department that you might be contacting them. They are looking forward to hearing from you! :D
