Impossibility to unistall Ranorex

Post by odklizec » Tue Jan 14, 2014 4:23 pm

Hi,

Because I'm currently experiencing a number of problems with 4.1.4, I've decided to uninstall it and install an older version (4.1.2 or 4.1.3). Sadly, I'm unable to do so. After an attempt to uninstall the existing version (via Add or Remove Programs), I'm receiving this error: "Fatal error during installation"...

RXUninstallError_1.png (125.6 KiB) Viewed 1769 times
After an attempt to uninstall it via the original RX installer, I'm getting an error about prematurely ended setup...
RXUninstallError_2.png

I'm not aware of any changes done to this system that could cause such issue. Is there another way to uninstall Ranorex 4.1.4 or forcibly replace the existing version with older one?

Thank you in advance!

Hello odklizec!

Please reboot your system and then try to uninstall Ranorex again. May you check the Microsoft Event Viewer if you get an error while attempting to uninstall Ranorex.

Regards,
Robert

Hi Robert,

Thank you for the reply. Good idea about the event viewer! There are logged two messages related to Ranorex.

first one:
.NET Runtime version 2.0.50727.3649 - Fatal Execution Engine Error (000006427F55357A) (80131506)

followed by this:
Faulting application ranorex.instrumentation.exe, version 4.1.4.16685, stamp 52a73017, faulting module mscorwks.dll, version 2.0.50727.3649, stamp 5174fbe7, debug? 0, fault address 0x0000000000243a34.

Have you uninstalled the .NET Framework or any of the C++ Runtime Redistributables installed with and required by Ranorex?
It looks like the uninstall process cannot even be started...

Can you try running the Ranorex Instrumentation Wizard, please? Select "Chrome" and disable the Google Chrome Addon. Then try to uninstall again.

Alex

Hi Alex,

Thanks for the reply. No, I did not uninstall .Net or any C++ redistributable. And the Chrome addon has been disabled in the instrumentation wizard. But I just tried to return to a prior restore point and guess what? Uninstall now works ;) So there must have been something broken in the OS. At least it works now.

Hello,

Unfortunately, I need to reopen this discussion. I just tried to install 4.1.5 on the very same machine and the installation/uninstallation of Ranorex fails with the same Fatal error. This time, system restore did not help. I also tried to repair .net framework (using this MS repair tool), as well as reinstalling .net. Nothing helped.

The errors in event viewer are the same as before:
first one:
.NET Runtime version 2.0.50727.3649 - Fatal Execution Engine Error (000006427F55357A) (80131506)

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
followed by:
Faulting application ranorex.instrumentation.exe, version 4.1.4.16685, stamp 52a73017, faulting module mscorwks.dll, version 2.0.50727.3649, stamp 5174fbe7, debug? 0, fault address 0x0000000000243a34.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
There are also two "Information" events. One issued just before the first error:
The description for Event ID ( 1040 ) in Source ( MsiInstaller ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: {62A8CEBD-AD59-422A-ADE0-7E8CBDC705AF}, 600, (NULL), (NULL), (NULL), , .
And one after the second error:
The description for Event ID ( 11725 ) in Source ( MsiInstaller ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Product: Ranorex 4.1 -- Removal failed., (NULL), (NULL), (NULL), (NULL), , .
Any idea what to try? Thank you in advance!

OK, after some more digging to find a solution, I found a MS tool called FixIt, which actually helped! There is an online page with some online repair options, but from some weird reasons, the online version of the installation/uninstallation fix tool failed to run. Luckily, there is also a portable version of the FixIt tool, which did the trick!

Just in case someone else hits to a similar problem, here is a direct link to the FixIt portable tool...
http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9775982

Once the program is started, in the filter select "Install or upgrade software or hardware" option. This should you provide with a list of related troubleshooters. Now select "Run Now" button besides the option "Fix problems that programs cannot be installed or uninstalled". This should start the troubleshooter. Then simply follow the suggested steps.

In my case, it fixed something in registry, related to Ranorex and Windows installer. Now I'm on 4.1.5 ;)
