Recordings not editable after opening solution as read-only

Post by bru » Thu Nov 14, 2013 9:03 am

Our company uses a source control management tool that is not integrated into Ranorex.
Therefore I have to do checkouts / checkins manually, which - usually - seems to work.

When checked in, all files are set to read-only.
When I want to edit the solution, I remove the read-only-attribute for all files and folders and then I am able to work with Ranorex.

But some minutes ago I wanted to open the soultion read-only (just for viewing some data).
2 dialogs (messages that some files cannot be saved) came up while opening the solution, I confirmed them.

But now - after removing the read-only attribute again, I am not able to edit recordings any more (button "Add New Action" is disabled, actions cannot be modified, ...).
I can create new recordings for this solution or edit the test suite, but I cannot even edit these newly created recordings!!!

There must be some main setting about the editability of recordings - please help me find it!

Thanks,
Juergen

Short note:

This issue can easily be reproduced:
1) Create new solution
2) Close Ranorex studio
3) Set all files and folders of solution to readonly
4) Open solution => Warning "Unable to save the solution in the Visual Studio format." appears, project is marked as "(readonly)"
5) Close solution
6) Remove readonly-attribute from all files and folders
7) Open solution, project is no longer marked as "(readonly)"
8) Recording in solution cannot be edited

Hi Juergen,

it seems that your recordings are still set read-only.
Does it change anything if you close and reopen your recordings?
Have you had a look at the *.rxrec files in your file system and checked if they are still set "read-only"?
Is it possible that your source control tool sets some files read-only again anyway?
There must be some main setting about the editability of recordings.
No, there is no such main setting in Ranorex.

I tried to reproduce your issue with your posted steps, but all works fine. Which Ranorex version do you use?

Thanks for your answer, Larissa!

I can reproduce this issue with Ranorex Studio 4.1.1 and 4.1.2.
No, the files are no longer set to read-only (unless the Win7 Explorer lies to me... ;) ).

Even if I add a new recording item to this Ranorex project, it will be created and added to the projects tree. But when I open this newly created recording, I cannot add new actions (button is disabled).
And the created files of the recording (.rxrec and .cs) are not read-only.

Best regards,
Juergen

Hi Juergen,

am I right that this behavior is now independent of source control?

It seems to be a timing issue. Does a restart of your solution or restart of your computer help?
I forwarded your issue to our developement team and I'll try finding a way reproducing this issue.

Have you anymore hints for me how this behavior happens?

Thanks,
Larissa

Larissa, you are right:
This issue on my computer has nothing to do with the source control tool we use.

Unfortunately neither restarting the solution nor restarting my computer did help ...

I also tried to copy the whole solution to another directory and open it again (without read-only attributes),
but the behaviour is still the same ... :(

I just solved this issue!

I deleted the whole solution on my local harddisk and did an update from my source control view.
Thus the solution was brought back to my harddisk.
Then I removed the read-only attributes and opened the solution - the recordings were editable again! :D

I guess there must have been some file within my solution (not checked into source control) that did store this information that the recordings cannot be edited ...

I'm lucky to be able to edit my recordings again, but if your development team is interested, I can do some further investigations on this issue.

Best regards,
Juergen

Hi Juergen,
good to hear that you have solved this issue.
Maybe you can send us a solution having the issue, or tell us which files you have/don't have under source control.

Thanks,
Larissa
