Ranorex regularly fails to connect to iOS app

Hi,

I'm currently writing tests in Ranorex that require actions to take place on a desktop browser and then open an iOS app and check there has been an update there. Everything is fine on the desktop side but when I create a new test recording and attempt to open the iOS app then I run into problems.

When I run the tests, Ranorex gets to the part where it restarts the app and you can see it restarting and then launching the app on the phones screen but it regularly (I'd estimate more than half the time) fails with a "Failed to app" message despite the fact I can see the app loaded fine on the phones screen.

I've attempted increasing the timeouts in the Global Variables > Plugins menu and I have the Ranorex service app loaded & the device showing as connected through a USB cable as well. I've also just updated my Ranorex version to 5.4.5.

Has anyone encountered this before and if so, what am I missing?

Hi Steven,

Have you tried to connect via WIFI? I believe it's generally recommended to use WIFI connection over USB. See this post:

Thanks for the quick reply.

I've been using USB as it's not really feasible to try via WiFi as the phone needs to point to our test environment & the desktop computer is unable to reliably point at the same WiFi network.

The reason I'm inclined to believe it's not the USB connection that is at fault is because the initial connection is always made & always see a "Restarting App 1/2" followed by a "Launching App 2/2" pop-up message on the phone, it just regularly fails after that saying "Failed to start app". I am also able to carry out validation on elements on the mobile device without losing connection too.

Hi Steven,

Have you reported this as a bug yet?
I am experiencing the same issue on iOS 9.2.1 (iPad, iPhone). It happens like 8 or 9 out of 10.
RxServiceApp running, RxBrowser will start and then get stuck there. The URL specified in the Set Value does not get entered.

Ranorex version: 5.4.5

Is it possible that there was a mistake on this version since the RxServiceApp v2.1.1 and RxBrowser v2.1.3 are exactly the same as the ones in Ranorex 5.4.4?

Steven is already in contact with us by email. We are currently in the process of analyzing the source of this problem. To facilitate the analysis it would also be great if you could send us your application under test whereby these problems occur. Thank you.

Concerning the service application and the Ranorex Browser
The version numbers of these applications are correct. The service application and the Rx Browser are the same as in Ranorex 5.4.4.

Hi Markus,

I have emailed the URL already to Andy Suarez from your Support or QA Team since we are also having other issues with object recognition when app is run in an iPhone 6 or 6s (iOS v9.2.1).

Update...
Sorry, about the object recognition issue. After a short meeting with Andy from the Support Team, there is no issue once the object is brought into view or if any action recorded with the list picker controls which are kind of hidden from the Object Spy by default.

Just an update, I've now been able to try over a WiFi connection & the problem persists.

I just want to inform you that we are in contact with Steven by email.

Unfortunately we were not able to reproduce these connection issues in our environment. Therefore, it would be great if everyone who is also facing those connection problems could verify that these problems do also occur on different machines and iOS devices.
