Edge and latest Windows 10 insider preview

Hi,

I had a Windows 10 VM all set up and working with Ranorex 5.4.6 and I was able to run my scripts on Edge. The build of Windows 10 was close to the original release, as I had not done very many updates.

I recently was requested to install the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview, which I did, and now my scripts cannot see the objects on my main login page. I was using Ranorex 5.4.6. I saw that Ranorex 6.0.1 was out, so I installed this and the results are the same. Still cannot see the objects.

More specific, Ranorex cannot see the objects within the DOM. In Spy, I have the Winapp for the Edge browser and the DOM for the page. When I expand the DOM, I see the Head and the Body tags. The body tag is red and it says invalid. I've tried running Spy as the admin. Still cannot see. In my Visual Studio code (not using Ranorex Studio), it cannot find any elements in the DOM either.

The Windows 10 version is 1607, and the build is 14372.0. This is the latest insider preview from a few days ago.

Any thoughts?

Hello Aracknid,

I'm afraid that Windows 10 Insider Preview builds are not officially supported. Nevertheless, we would like to have a look at the issue. May I ask if this refers only to the web elements on your main login page or do you have the same issue with other web pages?

Furthermore, it would be helpful if you could send a Ranorex Snapshot of the DOM structure to [email protected]. Please contact us by email in order we can try creating internal Ranorex log information.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Johannes

As Johannes said, Insider Previews are not supported by Ranorex.

If you need help from them, you should follow the recommendations given in Johannes' post, mainly sending them the snapshot at [email protected]. They may or may not be able to help.

However, again, Ranorex does not officially support Insider Preview versions of Windows, so you should really not be using it for your testing at this time.

Hi Everyone,

We were able to reproduce the issue with the Insider Preview build on our test environment and we added it to our internal bug-tracking system.

Currently, we do not know if and when this issue will be fixed. This depends on various factors. Nevertheless, all reported bugs and feature requests are documented in the release notes, with every new version release of Ranorex.

As mentioned previously, please note that Windows 10 Insider Preview builds are not officially supported.

Thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely,
Johannes

Hello everybody,

We found out that the reason for the issue is a bug in Microsoft Edge. Unfortunately, there is currently no workaround for this. When installing the latest Windows updates on Windows 10, Ranorex is no longer able to recognize the elements within Microsoft Edge.

We have already created a bug on the Microsoft website.
Accessing body.currentStyle via MSHTML interop causes Edge Content process to crash

It would be great if everybody who needs to test Microsoft Edge could vote for this bug in order to make it more important for Microsoft.

Thank you for your help.

Kind regards,
Bernhard

Microsoft posted that the "Won't fix" this issue, but no other comments that I can see or a reason why. Please tell me they gave you some work around or alternative method to support Edge testing?

Aracknid.

No, I'm sorry. The last word we heard from Microsoft support directly was that this is a bug and they are looking into it; this was right after we filed the bug. We did not get any other information, comment, workaround, or note except for the ones you can see in the list of "Comments" on the filed issue.

So I guess we are as surprised (and disappointed) as you are that the issue suddenly gets closed without further comment :(
At the moment, we cannot even re-open the issue, since we get an error message that "Something is changing, please try later" (for the last two days now).

It may help if you also express your need to get this bug fixed by commenting on the filed issue.

Regards,
Alex

Hello all,

Unfortunately, we have bad news. It seems Microsoft is not going to fix this issue.
The way how Ranorex recognized elements on web-pages represented in MS Edge doesn't work any more. We are currently searching for another solution, but this may take a while.

I'm sorry to inform you that Microsoft Edge is currently not supported by Ranorex.
Thank you for your understanding.

Best regards,
Bernhard
