5.4 Ranorex Studio IDE performance is very slow

We were previously using 5.3.0, and have only just recently (as in yesterday) updated the team to using Ranorex 5.4.0.

Team members are hosting Ranorex on either Win 7 x64 desktops, or within Win 7 x64 VMs.

The problem we're seeing, is that when opening a large Ranorex solution within the IDE, and also when initiating a recompile, sometimes the IDE will just not respond for up to a minute. There is no response to clicks, Windows marks the application as "Not Responding" in the title bar, there is no loading/building progress bar. Basically nothing appears to be happening for a minute and the user often thinks that the IDE has crashed.

But left to its own, it will eventually recover and then begin to do build, or whatever, and the IDE will begin responding to user input.

This doesn't seem to be an issue so much with execution, but just with opening or building a solution.

Our solution has about 24 projects in it, but I wouldn't think of it as large compared to some of the Visual Studio solutions that our dev teams manage.

This wasn't an issue in 5.3.0, and has only started happening as soon as we updated to 5.4.0.

Is there someway I can collect logging in the Ranorex Studio IDE to capture if it is having problems, and to provide feedback to the Ranorex support team?

We've been looking some more into this to try and see if we can help in tracing the issue.

A very repeatable trigger is the first build after starting the Ranorex Studio IDE and opening the project.

If the solution is kept open and subsequent builds are later triggered, then those work fine without the 1~2min IDE freeze.

We started up ProcMon, and watched the RanorexStudio process, and we see that it is remarkably busy during that time the IDE is unresponsive. It appears to be searching and filtering all the .Net Framework references both on disk and in the GAC.

The ProcMon log is huge, so I've compressed it and stuck it on DropBox, and it shows all the activity while the IDE is unresponsive. The link to the dropbox file is below. It's 180MB compressed, and unzips to 3.7GB:

Hi,
Do you have any updates for this problem? May be you have some recommendations how to organize or not organize solution to avoid low performance?

Hi dmitry.abramov,

The issue, reported by jasoncleo, should be fixed in one of our next releases, but unfortunately I cannot give you a time frame when it will be released.
Thank you for your understanding.

Concerning organizing solutions
May I ask you if you are already aware of our blog posting Organizing a test automation project with Ranorex

Regards,
Markus (S)

Thank you for answer.
Yes, I have read this post. It's really useful. Unfortunately it not contains any notes about possible performance problem, especially after update to 5.4 version. So I expect improvements in next versions of Ranorex Studio.

Hi dmitry.abramov,

The issue of jasoncleo should be fixed with 5.4.1, which should get released quite soon.

If the performance issue should then still persist, please send us an email ([email protected]) with the Ranorex solution you have troubles with.

Thanks,
Markus
