AI has quickly become one of the loudest themes in software testing. Nearly every major test automation platform is announcing new AI-powered features and promising transformational improvements with minimal effort. However, the reality testers are seeing tells a different story. Many AI features feel rushed, disconnected from workflows, or create more work than they eliminate.
At Ranorex, we’re hearing the same thing: Teams want help with stability, maintainability, and complexity, not a layer of novelty. If AI isn’t reliable, it isn’t useful. That’s why when it comes to integrating AI into Ranorex Studio, we’re not racing to add AI just to check a box. We’re building AI capabilities that actually improve the test automation experience.
The problem: Rushed, low-value AI features
A pattern has emerged across the test automation market: the release of “AI” features that don’t really solve the problems that many teams require solutions for. Some tools claim to have AI-generated tests but produce brittle scripts. Some layer machine learning on top of mediocre object recognition engines. Some organizations outsource intelligence to third-party APIs, which often have limited transparency regarding their training data and security.
The result is predictable: QA teams try the feature once or twice, receive inconsistent results, and revert to manual workarounds. In other words, the promise of “AI-powered testing” collapses under the weight of unreliable execution.
Ranorex has no interest in repeating that folly. Reliability and precision aren’t optional to the process; they’re foundational to its very success. And if AI features don’t meet that bar, they don’t belong in the marketing headlines, much less the platform itself.
We’re not trying to do it first—we’re trying to do it right
For AI to improve test automation, it must meet three criteria: it must be accurate, securely trained, and aligned with work processes. Strength in those areas is what ensures AI contributes to more stable, maintainable tests rather than creating additional unpredictability.
The training process matters
AI models don’t have an innate understanding of application behavior; they learn only from the data they’re trained on. Models require curated, validated datasets that accurately represent the challenges of real-world automation across desktop, web, and mobile environments.
In this capacity, Ranorex is training models inside secure, isolated systems using internal datasets to guarantee clarity, control, and protection of customer information. No sensitive data flows to third-party resources.
The tech has to fit naturally into workflows
Test automation teams have spent years refining their processes, toolchains, and frameworks. Good AI shouldn’t ask them to reinvent anything. Instead, it should enhance what testers already do: recording interactions, analyzing UI structures through Spy, maintaining repositories, refining logic, and preparing suites for CI/CD execution.
The output must be consistent
AI features that behave differently run to run, or that generate unstable locators or scenarios, create more problems than they solve. That’s why Ranorex Studio will have AI that reinforces the foundations of reliable automation: reliable object recognition, fewer breakages, and insight into test behavior.
AI is available now with DesignWise
While AI in Ranorex Studio is still under development, DesignWise, which is powered by Sembi IQ, already leverages AI to model test scenarios, identify redundancy, uncover edge cases, and expedite the transition from requirements to stable automated tests.
Unlike many AI features on the market, DesignWise does not generate flaky scripts, hallucinate, or guess at application behavior. Its intelligence is applied at the design level, where precision has the biggest influence. Just as importantly, Sembi IQ is trained on controlled datasets within secure environments, adhering to the same standards Ranorex uses internally.
Where we’re at and what’s next
Our teams are engaged in research, prototyping, and training. That includes refining models using structured internal datasets, testing AI behavior against real automation challenges, and validating results across multiple environments. All of this happens within secure, isolated systems built to protect customer data and ensure model reliability.
You can expect that when AI arrives in Ranorex Studio, it will be:
- Integrated into existing workflows
- Trained with care and technical rigor
- Designed for desktop, web, and mobile testing
- Delivered at the high standard of quality our users expect
